Helping An Overweight Child Lose Weight

Are you worried about childhood obesity? Have you tried helping an overweight child lose weight? It's no secret that there are more obese children today than ever. With the invention of video games, computers, and more channels on the t.v. to watch, kids in general do not get the exercise they used to. This is not to say that these inventions are bad things. They can be quite convenient for parents who need to keep their kids busy for a couple of hours and for kids who can't go outside and play. But there should be a limit set on how much children get to watch t.v., play video games, or play on the computer.

Kids need some physical activities in their lives. One way to make sure they get this activity is for us as parents, guardians, and friends, to participate in these activities with them. A lot of parents with obese children are overweight themselves and can benefit from doing some kind of physical activities with their children. Chase them around the yard, see who can run the fastest, go jogging as a family. These are just a few ideas to help you get involved with helping an overweight child lose weight.

Some more ideas could be to play baseball, football, or another kind of sports with your children who are obese or overweight. Take walks with them, or go swimming. Swimming is a great way to lose weight if done right. There are some game machines today that are more interactive physically and can be a great way in helping an overweight child lose weight. Some of the games make use of the whole body and can get children moving while playing.

Do be careful when exercising or when having your child do overly strenuous activities. Make sure there are no health risks involved by seeing a doctor first. The doctor may have better ideas for how to help your obese child lose weight if there are health risks involved in your child losing weight naturally.

Eating right is very important in helping an overweight child lose weight. Keeping sweets out of the house along with sugary drinks such as kool-aid and soda, can help an obese child lose weight. Instead of sweets, have carrot and celery sticks handy for snacking on. Apples, bananas and oranges are all good snacks that most children love. Instead of kool-aid and soda, have bottled water and juice handy. Why bottled water instead of letting them just drink out of the sink? Besides the fact that sink water may be contaminated, a lot of kids who wouldn't even touch the water out of the sink, actually enjoy drinking water out of the bottle. You don't have to buy fresh bottled water every time, instead recycle and use the empty water bottles by filling them with filtered water.

When you do buy bottled water make sure you know where the water came from, how it was purified, and if there are any chemicals in the bottle. Some bottled water may not be so safe to drink.

When we are helping an overweight child lose weight we need to set good examples. When we participate in doing physical activities with our children and eating right, we are in fact, helping ourselves to lose weight as well. When they see us eating healthy and exercising, they are more likely to do the same.

Facts About Childhood Obesity

With childhood obesity growing at alarming rates, it is important that we know the facts of childhood obesity when helping an overweight child lose weight. Knowing the facts of childhood obesity should encourage us to help the overweight or obese child lose weight.

When we think about the health problems that these kids could be facing, just because of their weight, it should motivate us to help the child even more. Some of these health problems include Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Hypertension, and Sleep Apnea. Childhood obesity can cause children who are obese to have breathing problems, have a hard time moving around, and have other heart related issues.

There are also psychological issues involved with overweight children. Constantly being picked on and made fun of in school because of their weight can cause the child to have hurt feelings, become depressed or worse. If you believe your child is having emotional problems, try talking to them about it. Make a plan, with your child, to get back at their teaser by losing weight and looking great. This will motivate them more to lose weight.

Most kids who are obese are not eating the right foods. Eating the right foods can cause us to feel better, be more alert, and do better in school. If your child is not eating the right foods, make a vow right now to make sure that they start eating right today.

Obesity affects people in different ways. Ultimately, childhood obesity can lead to adult obesity which can lead to death. Unfortunately that does not mean your child won't die from being obese until they are an adult, because even a child can die from complications of being obese.  That is why it is so important that we help our children combat childhood obesity now. Helping an overweight child lose weight could mean helping save that child's life.

The first paragraph is quite telling. The electronics are there for the convenience of the parents. If your child needs to lose weight, send him outside. Take the games out of their rooms, watch TV together in one room. Parents should not leave their children to screens to be raised.

I know plenty of folks who eschewed televisions entirely. Their children are bright and healthy and creative. They haven't spent mind numbing hours stuffing food in their mouths in front of a plasma screen.

YOU are the parent. You make the choice. Children, especially small children, only eat what you buy for them. Don't buy crap and they won't eat it. Don't put Cheetos and Zebra Cakes in the cupboard and your kids won't go sharking for it.

And send them outside. You go with them. Even if you just sit on the porch and watch, just being out there makes them want to move. There's a lot of space outside and not a lot of comfortable places to sit. Tell them to climb trees. Teach them the games you learned: how to jump rope, play freeze tag, red light/green light, crack the whip. Have them walk to the store (and go with them) instead of driving them, when possible. Play catch, kick a ball. Parents are generally capable of participating in some way. If you are there, even if you're just watching, you're participating. It will encourage your children to play outside. And encouraging parents to go outside makes it safer for other neighborhood children to come out.

Way back before the pill became a widespread method of birth control, there were always children outside. Families had four, six, eight or more children and nearly every house had a family. Now families are smaller, but there are still children out there. Have your children find them, make friends. If there's someone to play with they will be more willing to go outside and play.

For older children, limit the use of their vehicles so they get some walking in. Cars are for school and lessons and after school activities. Each use after that must be approved on a case by case basis. Of course it depends. If you are fortunate enough to grow up in a small town, this is much easier.

And if your child needs to use a computer, don't let them spend hours on it. You set the hours. You require a certain amount of time away from electronics. Again, you are the parent, you set the rules.

And remember this. Small children may carry some weight, but that's not always bad. Toddlers and babies will have some fat on them. This does not mean they are obese. It is fat they will burn off when they start running around. I've seen some very fat babies (including myself) become very svelte adults.

Concentrate on activity and healthy eating, not diets and working out. Children were designed to run around all the time. We are interrupting that behavior. Take away all other options and send them somewhere to play. And if it's in your house: remove all breakable objects from the area and put away the sharp ones. Then let them have fun.
